Twitter and Tweets

Maybe it's my age or lack of tech knowledge but I do not get twitter. Not only do I not get it but I think it's ridiculous. Can someone tell me why I care what Ashton Kutcher is eating or thinks of Obama's dog? Also why would anyone care what I'm thinking while sitting on the john or what movie I'm seeing tonight. Isn't this the pinnacle of self love? "I'm so important that everyone wants to follow my every move" Please explain!!

  1. Okay, here's one opinion on twitter. Twitter, most of the time, is ridiculous. I agree with you that no one does -- or should -- care what I do during the day. Heck, even I think my daily life is dull.

But during those rare moments when you're sitting in the library, researching or whatever, and you wonder if anyone you know is around to dissuade you from your task ... then twitter comes in handy. You can write "I'M IN DESERT HILLS LIBRARY" and if your twitter list is long enough, maybe someone will drop by to see you.

I think it is mostly for instantaneous contact, a way to broadcast your whereabouts or happenings.

Twitter is great as an organizing tool. Think: Obama. Or, better yet, think of the recent Tea party in Phoenix. Many of the teapartiers contacted other people who contacted still others, ad infinitum, until several thousand people showed up. Rather amazing, really.

The teaparty was a television (hannity, et.al.), twitter and facebook phenomenon.

  2. Kristen, I agree that Twitter could be useful in business or organizing. I just wonder how much it's used for that and how much for the social aspect.

Ashton Kucher has a million contacts or friends or whatever you call them signed up for his Tweets? Will the world come to an end if we don't know what he's doing? It just seems this is all part of the slow slide to distance ourselves from one another. We live by emails, Tweets, Facebook etc. instead of a phone call or an actual conversation. It keeps us connected to many but we are close to none. When the chips are down are your Twitter friends going to bail you out? I would rather have 2 close friends I can count on no matter what than hundreds of contacts that just want to stay at a distance. It's easy to not get involved or hurt when you have no emotional connection. To me that's what all these technological advancments have done. There's people out there that think they have a great social life and never leave the house. That's sad.

  3. What ever happened to being along with your thoughts? I like to grab a fishing pole, drive down to the lake, and turn off my cell phone and fish. Then it’s just Mother Nature and me. I’m loving it and my wife doesn’t get jealous. If the world comes to an end, she can tell me when I get home.
